what is the best purifier for cigarette smoke?

: I have a neighbor downstairs who smoke constantly in his apartment and the smoke comes right into my apartment..its to a point my eyes burn, i get headaches, and all my clothes smell like cigarette.. i cannot really tell him to stop smoking so i am looking for an air purifier that specifically works for cigarette smoke. can anyone give me an adivce? thanks!

ooooh that’s a toughie! I dunno about a purifier, but I’d try talking to your landlord and asking him to have you switch units. That’s just not a fair situation for you! I hate cigarette smoke! BLEH!

What’s the best air purifier/filter to buy for heavy cigarette smoke?

:We have someone in our house that smokes constantly. The air is always thick with it and she will not go outside or respect us (who do not smoke) in any way by cutting back or going outside. Actually if she did go outside she may never come in except to maybe go to the bathroom or sleep. That’s how much she smokes.

She has no intentions of quitting and has been quite vocal that she “will not quit simply because you want me to!” <== her words almost exactly.

So we’ve given in and decided that the best thing for our health is to try to buy an expensive air purifier/filter. But which one will help the best and take in and filter as much smoke as she puts out?

Home is a single floor home with an open-floor design. No matter where you go the smoke permates throughout…eventually.
Edit 2: It’s not so much that she doesn’t know. She honestly just doesn’t CARE.

Unless she is willing to stay in one spot while smoking, there is no effective method for filtering cigarette smoke. The best method is to set up a smoking room with an air exchange system. This is a box that blow the room air outside and takes in fresh air. In the process, it takes the heat/cold from the air being exhausted and transfers it to the air coming in. It also balances humidity. If the door to the room is closed, the room will be maintained at a slightly negative pressure, minimizing the transfer of smoke to the rest of the house.

If she insists on being in a room with everyone else, the next best system is an exhaust fan close to her chair that pulls the air and smoke outside. This is similar to the exhaust fan over a kitchen stove, and is about as effective. A well designed one will get some, but not all, of the smoke.

The third choice is a filter system with HEPA (blocks very fine particles) and charcoal filters, and an ozone generator. Smoke is composed of extremely fine particles, combined with a variety of gasses. As a result, it travels through a room on the air currents that are present in every house. You can only filter what you can capture with the filter equipment. Since smoke spreads so easily, it is difficult to capture it before it travels beyond the range of the filter’s fan.

Does an air purifier work for secondhand smoke?

Hello – I have been living in an apartment building for two years now. The older lady living above me smokes in her apartment – VERY inconsiderate of others. I wrote a letter to my landlord over a year ago concerning the issue, and the secretary simply told me that the older lady had been here much longer than I had – so they cannot ask her to stop. I find this amazing due to there being a child who lives in our building, too! Anyway, they will not ask her to stop.

Now I’m considering buying an air purifier to at least try to get the secondhand smoke out of my apartment. It’s my last resort, as I’ve tried putting cardboard over the vent in my bathroom – but it didn’t work that well. I cannot open my windows with this heat – nor in the winter.The smoke burns my eyes, gives me a headache, and of course the long term damage (lung cancer).

Will an air purifier make any difference? I do not want to spend a lot of money – because if I had a lot of money, I would move out and find a more expensive apartment. Unfortunately, that’s not an option. If you have a similar problem – and you’ve purchased an air purifier that you like, please recommend it to me. THANK YOU!

Air Purifiers are helpful, although not a cure-all for removing second hand smoke for those of us who are unfortunate enough to be in its path. If friends neighbors or loved ones insist on being irresponsible and smoke tobacco anywhere near you, air purifiers can lessen the toxic hazard that secondhand smoke presents.

Anyone have suggestions on the best air purifier for a smoke filled home?

I’m 28 an have been living in this house for most of my life. I moved out to live with boyfriends and what not, but for the most part have lived here. My uncle (who chain smokes) and my grandfather (who smokes cigars) has lived here the whole time I’ve been here, and before my mom and grandmother passed away they also smoked and lived here. Needless to say I’ve always got my fair share of 2nd hand smoke. I’m starting to get a cough now that I never had before, and I am wondering what is a good air filter for smoke? I have TWO air purifiers in my room that I have to constantly clean, of course one is old and the other is the ionic pro but with the smoke in this house it gets dirty SO fast I have to clean it every week.
I even have a filter type material double layered over my air vent but mostly that just keeps out dust, doesn’t work too well on smoke ;(
Some of you might say "well your 28, just move out" yea I wish I could..but I cant I because I’m taking care of my 81 year old grandfather who has cancer (he says cigars are his only "vice" and let me tell you, he smokes ALL day)
PLEASE I need advice on a good air purifier that’s affordable like $100 or under that is good for smoke & not just dust & allergens..any advice will be appreciated. I’m tired of not being able to breathe ;(

My grandmother gave me her old Holmes air purifier but even with a new HEPA filter it blows out air that smells like cigarette smoke. How do I properly clean it so that it smells like it’s supposed to?

First of all, you need to find out where the smell is coming form. Is it from the air filter itself or maybe inside the air purifier. If you know how to open it up, you can find the source of the smell. If not, let others help you.
