Choice between air purifiers – Blueair or Air Lights?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Hi all – I’m looking to buy an air purifier for my bedroom (just over 150 sq.ft.), to help reduce dust, airborne allergens, etc. My mother smokes a lot, which also doesn’t help. Having been diagnosed with a (very) minor, restrictive lung disease, I’d like to start taking better care of my health – especially in regards to respiration. We do have the general air filter attached to the A/C / heating unit, but I would like something more.

Doing some research, I thought I would just get the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze, but have read many terrible things about it – specifically, the ozone produced is VERY bad for your health. Looking around, I found the Blueair 250E Digital Air Purifier (http://www.achooallergy.com/blueair250eairpurifier.asp#product_reviews) and the Air Lights Plasma Air Purifier (http://reviews.ebay.com/Review-of-the-Air-Lights-Plasma-Air-Purifier_W0QQugidZ10000000002480036).

I’m leaning towards the Blueair, but would like others input and suggestions!

I have heard great things about the BlueAir and know a few people who own one. It’s not the same model as you have listed above, but they all love their system. One family member who has a BlueAir absolutely loves it and has had it for over 5 years and it still works great.

Here’s a site that sells this a little cheaper.

Would an air purifier be the perfect remedy to my nighttime allergies?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Well i have allergies to the worst thing in the world.. the thing we all hate the most THE DUST MITE and pollen and mold and smoke

Im going to buy an air purifier soon but i just want to hear from people who have air purifiers

How well do they work? Do you feel 100% better? Can you sleep at night? Are they easy to maintain?

Sorry but i have to also disagree with Caz. Yes i accept that many of the air purifiers on the market are just snake oil and literally useless this does not mean all of them are.

Right.. lets answer your question.

Straight away a problem with dust mites require a HEPA filter. A real HEPA filter will promise you 99.7% removal of any particles bigger than 0.3 microns. How big is a micron you ask? A micron is actually 0.000039 of an inch. The full stop at the end of this sentence is 397 microns wide.

An allergy with dust mites is actually an allergy to their feces.. uuuk i know! Dust mites produce about 20 pellets of poo per day, each measuring about 10 to 24 microns in size. Right so a proper HEPA filter will catch this dust mite poo and remove it from the air.

The reason i bought my first purifier was because of a dust mite allergy as i had most of my problems at night. The first purifier i bought was the Sharp FP-P35CX Plasmacluster Air Purifier and it was freaking awesome. I no longer have to take benadryl when i sleep in my own room. The only down side is that i can’t cart my purifier to my friends houses when i stay there.

Like with all air purifiers you need to clean them regularly or they will not work as well. My sharp purifier came with a washable filter so i didn’t need to buy one.

If you choose purifier just make sure you go with one with a proper 99.7% HEPA filter and not just some cheap ionization unit as they will do nothing!
